Chronic Payday 3 will be released in 2023 thanks to Koch Media
Overkill Software, the development studio behind Payday: The Heist and Payday 2, was acquired by Starbreeze, which now has the rights to make a payday 3. After the flop that caused Overkills The Walking Dead in 2008, the studio is undergoing restructuring and came close to bankruptcy.
Several bad decisions put Starbreeze at risk. In addition to Overkill’s The Walking Dead, the studio put a good chunk of its funds into funding a VR headset, a project that was unsuccessful. Since they were ready to do whatever it takes not to close the studio, they only parted some of their productions such as System Shock 3, 10 Crowns or Dead by Daylight.
In January last year, Digital Bros, which owns 505 Games, announced that it would acquire Starbreeze for the modest sum of 19.2 million dollars. Ultimately, it will not be Digital Bros who will publish the game, but Koch Media. Note that the payday license remains in the hands of Starbreeze. Koch Media only invests funds in the project. More than 50 million dollars were used to support the development and marketing of the third opus.
