Concord will shut down on September 6, just 11 days after release. Players on PS5 and PC will receive a full refund for their purchase of the game as the team responsible for the game and Sony re-plan their next steps.

The news broke a few minutes ago in a PlayStation blog post, in which Ryan Ellis (game director at Firewalk Studios) described the future direction of the ill-fated team-based shooter.

“Concord fans — We’ve been closely following your feedback since Concord launched on PlayStation 5 and PC, and we’re grateful to everyone who has joined us on the journey to Northstar. Your support and the passionate community that has grown around the game mean a lot to us.”

“However, while many aspects of the experience are resonating with our players, we also realize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch have not gone as smoothly as we expected. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to retire the game starting September 6, 2024 and explore various options, including those that will better engage our players.”

“While we determine the best way forward, sales of Concord will cease immediately, and we will begin offering full refunds to all players who purchased the game for PS5 or PC. If you purchased the game for PlayStation 5 from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, refunds will be issued to your original method of payment.”

Concord had a rocky launch, with very low player numbers on day one. The number peaked at 697 players on Steam on launch day, and has been declining ever since. As of this writing, the game has been online for 30 days, which is far lower than other games of similar budgets currently on the market.

Whether the game goes free-to-play, gets a major remake in a few years, or is abandoned forever remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that after eight years of development and millions of dollars invested, this wasn’t the outcome that Firewalk, Sony, or anyone else expected.
