Only in India for the time being
After Netflix, Amazon, and Co., the popular Messenger WhatsApp now also responds to the corona virus and related export restrictions. In India, status videos are released for a limited time to ease the burden on WhatsApp servers.
Due to the corona crisis, most people spend a lot of time in their four walls. Of course, this will have a significant impact on Internet usage. Netflix, Amazon, and Co. have responded to this and reduced their streaming quality accordingly. Now, WhatsApp is taking the first step and testing it to reduce server load.
According to a report from Wabetainfo, a site specializing in WhatsApp, the Messenger has limited the duration of Indian status videos. From now on, users can only use videos up to 15 seconds as status. The regulation currently only affects India, but cannot rule out its extension to other countries. It is unclear whether there will be further restrictions. The Messenger service may limit the general upload size of files to reduce overall traffic.
