The documentary takes you into the wilderness of Montana, where a female cougar tries to raise her offspring, defying the cold winter and the extreme climatic conditions of the Rocky Mountains.
Nature in the northern Rocky Mountains has changed fundamentally over time. Today, wilderness and civilization coexist here. One resident of this new world is a shy cougar mother who has to raise her three cubs. The once wild landscape is now filled with roads and houses, abandoned buildings and telephone booths dot the landscape, cows take the place of wild buffalo, fences break up the once open valley and roads have forced the animals to change routes to winter quarters. If you want to survive in this changed environment, you have to adapt.
The film follows how a mother cougar, against all odds, uses every obstacle to her advantage to get her cubs through a harsh winter. The huntress skilfully uses the changes in her environment to gain the upper hand. While people hardly notice the mountain lions in the midst of their homes and gardens, the other animals are well aware of their presence. They watch the area anxiously and tensely, afraid that the big cat might suddenly appear in the long grass or behind a tree. It’s not for nothing that they say in Montana: You only see a mountain lion if he wants to! The recordings, for which the film team observed the mountain lions in their natural habitat for two years, are all the more fascinating.
