It’s been a good few hours for legendary developer Team Ninja. The studio just launched Crouching Dragon: Fallen Dynasty On all platforms, but it’s especially noticeable on PC.
The PC version, available on Steam, the Windows Store, and on PC Game Pass, topped the charts on Valve’s platform, well ahead of any previous release from Team Ninja or publisher Koei Tecmo.
At the time of writing, Crouching Dragon peaked at nearly 74,000 concurrent players on Steam – a number that continues to climb every few minutes, according to SteamDB. Currently, the action RPG is just one spot short of Steam’s top 15 most popular games.
As more and more players start playing the game, the numbers will get better and Wolong might even make it into the top ten. Unsurprisingly, this follows on from the game’s strong sales on Valve’s platform, rave reviews, and a concurrent peak of 57,500 from the recent demo.
“Crouching Dragon” is currently the third best-selling game on Steam worldwide, second only to the popular game “Children of the Forest”. That’s an especially impressive spot considering its $60 price and Day 1 availability of Game Pass.
In fact, looking at both Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo’s history on Steam, Crouching Dragon is by far the most successful Steam launch for both, surpassing the previous record holder Nioh 2 – Complete Edition’s peak of 41,325.
Unfortunately, as the number of players continues to increase, so does the number of negative reviews. Crouching Dragon currently has a mostly negative rating on Steam, based on over 2,500 user reviews.
Most of the reviews lamented the state of the PC port, which has sadly been the subject of a run by Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo. While Crouching Dragon’s PC port is better than many of the studio’s past projects, it still has major issues.
Crashing, issues launching the game at an incorrect resolution, stuttering, low framerates despite adequate hardware, and random white flickering are all reported issues with the port. Crouching Dragon also has a tendency to get stuck at 720p resolution, especially when multiple GPUs (including virtual GPUs) are present.
DLSS support was advertised ahead of release, but won’t actually arrive until sometime in a future patch. It looks like the mouse and keyboard support is sub-par at best, with sub-standard layout, slow mouse movement, etc.
