There's a new manga reading app coming soon, this time from anime giant Crunchyroll.
This week at CES 2025, during a press conference held by Sony, Crunchyroll announced that it will launch a new app, this time one that allows you to read comics. According to Crunchyroll's own website, the app will “join the service as a premium add-on, scheduled to launch later in 2025” and it will “launch as a standalone program on iOS and Android called Crunchyroll Manga and support The web browser has plans for the future. “It is currently only planned to launch in English in the United States and Canada, with other language versions coming later, but there is no word on when it will launch in other regions.

Not only that, there isn't even any confirmation of what you can read on it. Viz is one of the major manga publishers and has its own app where you can read works like Inuyasha and Uzumaki, as well as a Shonen Jump app where you can read almost all of the Weekly Shonen Jump titles, Such as “Chainsaw Man” and “Jujutsu Kaisen”. Crunchyroll can obviously work with other smaller publishers, but some of its most popular games are already covered. Then, there's the issue of Crunchyroll itself.
First, it offered comics until last month, but they weren't particularly popular and there wasn't much to read. Add to this the fact that users and subscribers are constantly expressing dissatisfaction with the anime app due to its poor usability and lack of features, so there isn’t much reason to feel confident about the new app. It's no surprise that Crunchyroll wants to get into comics as well, but we'll have to see if the app is any good.
