In the meantime, Crytek has long since confirmed the work on the shooter sequel Crysis 4, but tangible details have largely been left out. Now at least it has become known who will be in charge of the new hope.
Crytek brought in external expertise for the work on Crysis 4, because the post of game director was by no means directly filled internally. Instead, they have used something else and brought in the former game director of another popular action game.
This refers to Mattis Engstrom, who previously acted as game director of Hitman 3 at IO Interactive. Engström has been working on the Hitman series for his former employer since the reboot in 2017 and ultimately played a key role in the last part, which was so successful. He was still in charge of the first two reboot parts as a level designer before being promoted for the part Hitman 3, which was released in 2021.
Before joining IO Interactive, Engström also worked for Ubisoft, where he worked as a level designer on Far Cry 3 and, in this respect, also gained genuine first-person shooter experience. This is interesting in that Crytek originally worked on the very first Far Cry, turned its back on the series and ultimately left it with Ubisoft. Crytek then brought out its own shooter series with Crysis.
So now Engstrom is also dedicated to the new part of Crysis 4 as the lead developer. The work still appears to be at a very early stage; the release is probably still far away. Crytek continues to hire staff from various positions for the new shooter; among other things, an art director and several game designers are being sought. The last part of the franchise was released with Crysis 3 in 2013.
