The road to success was immensely rocky for Cyberpunk 2077, but also one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history. Now CD Projekt RED has commented on the sales figures.
The success story of a game could hardly be much bumpier. After a catastrophic launch with countless technical problems, especially on the old consoles, CD Projekt RED never gave up on the ambitious action role-playing game, put a few more years of work into the game along with numerous updates, followed up with an absolutely remarkable expansion with Phantom Liberty and supplied the fans even after their launch with additional content, such as the once promised metro system.
However, the game never suffered from poor sales figures, even though the PS4 version was quietly banned from the Playstation Store shortly after its launch (and has since been reinstated).
But was the rework worth it? Apparently yes, based on the current sales figures that CD Projekt RED has now announced. Accordingly, the main game has now sold over 30 million copies, and the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold at least 8 million copies. The main game has increased by another 5 million units since October 2023, and Phantom Liberty has also increased by 5 million since the end of 2023. Figures that, in retrospect, more than justify the immense work that CDPR put into the game after the botched launch.
After all, CD Projekt RED not only worked on ironing out technical problems, but also completely reworked most of the game mechanics and systems, from gunplay to the skill system. In addition, the brand was pushed even further with the anime spin-off Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the integration of Idris Elba as a main character in Phantom Liberty was also an announcement after Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand. Apart from that, Cyberpunk 2077 has even gone from being an ugly duckling to being a technical showcase swan thanks to the integration of modern technologies such as DLSS with frame generation or full ray tracing.
It's all the more pleasing that the successor is already being planned and The Witcher 4 has just started full production. It has also been confirmed that the Complete Edition of Cyberpunk 2077 including the expansion will be released for MAC next year, and another animated series for Netflix is in the works, produced by the same studio that also launched Edgerunners with great success. A live-action adaptation is also in the early concept phase at CDPR.
