Cyberpunk 2077 is currently the most played single player game on Steam. The reasons for this are diverse.
What’s good for The Witcher 3 can’t hurt Cyberpunk 2077: Just in time for the start of the Netflix series Edgerunners, CD Projekt Red’s role-playing game is experiencing a second spring on Steam, the number of players is higher than it has been for a long time. Something similar happened at the start of The Witcher and again during the course of Season 2 on the streaming platform.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now, two years after its release, experiencing a much smaller boost than the fantasy role-playing game from the same developer (up to 65,000 players in one day at the time). But it’s still enough to get Cyberpunk 2077 #1 in the list of most played single player games catapult to Steam. At least if you look at the titles without multiplayer mode or online functionality, yesterday September 15, 2022 was enough 36,806 concurrent active players for the top spot, as noted by Reddit user Lymbasy:

That’s more than since February 2022, when the big patch 1.5 was released, which turned the entire game upside down. The 36,000 is of course far from the peak value for the release in December 2020 (830,387 players). What is remarkable, however, is how many different factors in Cyberpunk 2077 are coming together to make this small revival possible. Markus Schwerdtel also started this year:

Update on player numbers
GameStar user Stefan1200 drew our attention to the fact that today, September 16th, the number of players has even increased to over 43,000 active at the same time. This puts Cyberpunk 2077 in 21st place among the most played games according to official Steam statistics.

In fact, it probably plays too the generous discount a role that CD Projekt Red is currently granting to new Cyberpunk 2077 buyers. The role-playing game with the moving story about bugs and co. is there currently reduced by 50 percent on Steam for the price of 29.99 dollars.
The so-called Edgerunners update for Cyberpunk 2077 was recently released with Patch 1.6, which added new missions, among other things. In addition, the announcement of the first and only story DLC Cyberpunk 2077 recently made headlines; Phantom Liberty is scheduled for release in 2023. In the eyes of GameStar editor Valentin, the addon decides the cyberpunk future.
Then, of course, there is the aforementioned Netflix publicity with the new series. For Edgerunners there’s just lots of praise onlinecolleague Steffi is also impressed, partly because the episodes are very closely based on the game universe:

Incidentally, the boom on Steam is also reflected in the Steam Reviews; on September 15, 418 new reviews of Cyberpunk 2077 were published on Valve’s online platform. Of these, 352 were positive; overall the title stands 77 percent positive reviews out of a total of 424,157.
