If we’ve often seen parents withhold video games from their children for a set amount of time to punish them for late-night play, this dad opted for a completely opposite and extreme punishment. We explain it to you!
Video game addiction in China
When we talk about video games, there is a market that is particularly popular with publishers of all kinds: the Chinese market. With a population of one and a half billion, the country has a good set of potential players to seek out. And luckily for publishers, they don’t hesitate to devote time to video games, quite the opposite. So much so that the Chinese government was quick to worry about the rise of an alleged addiction to video games, particularly among the youngest.
For this reason, more than a year ago, the government decided to restrict access to games for minors. Since September 2021, they are only allowed to play online from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. and only on weekends during school hours. According to the China Game Industry Committee, this policy has paid off and the problem of young Chinese people’s addiction to video games has been eliminated “decided”. And yet, The fear of your child becoming addicted to video games is always very present, as this tale of punishment illustrates, to say the least.

It’s quite fortunate that the boy accepted without feeling the trap coming.
He played like this for 17 hours without a break until he became nauseous. The boy broke down in tears and agreed never to play that late at night again. He even wrote a letter in English explaining that he would now do his homework well and would not play before or after bed. Mission successful for the father who proudly shared this punishment on Douyin, the Chinese Tik Tok. However, he does not recommend the latter to all parents. It only worked for him because of his son “Usually gets good grades and is very obedient. He often goes outside with me and his physical condition is good. But even with this little accuracy, we can still express some doubts about the educational value of such punishment, which is unconventional to say the least. Not sure if all parents really want to reproduce it at home…
