DC has all the trump cards, it just has to play them out – with nerd culture

Stop! Please don’t fall asleep when we say “Superman.” The radiant man from the planet Krypton may now seem more boring than the sausage that is molding in the back of your fridge. As you know, no one needs it anymore, everything is yesterday’s super snow.

But that’s not true! There’s so much more that could be done with Superman – even apart from stories in which he becomes evil or dies, because there have already been enough of those.

The potential for new perspectives, new ideas, new stories would be there – and that applies to the entire DC Universe!

GameStar Talk: All videos and podcasts at a glance

Our very own Justice League discusses where this potential comes from and why video games (hello, Arkham series!) as well as animated series and films often exploit it better than the movies:

  • Michael Graf always claims that he doesn’t like Batman (and that’s true), but he also has to admit that Batman and Superman played a much bigger role in his childhood than he thought. He’s also just started getting into DC animated films and has already discovered some gems along the way.
  • Dimitry Halley bathes in superhero comics, so to speak, and concludes: The DC Universe is a shadow of what it could be! Because in every nook and cranny it reveals potential that movies and games could use.
  • Marco Risch is dedicated to his YouTube channel Nerd culture and in the podcast Nerd & Culture of film analysis and has high hopes for James Gunn, who will steer the DC universe in the future. Marco’s favorite series adaptation of all comes from his DC pen: Peacemaker!

DC’s strength may be NOT going the Marvel way. So don’t build up a great continuity that drags on after your showdown through sometimes more, sometimes less interesting individual stories.

Instead, DC can consciously stick to what has distinguished them since Tim Burton’s Batman films: make use of its fantastic characters and villains (!) and always interpret them in new and interesting ways.

You can see exactly how and what examples there are in the video above – and of course you can hear it here in the podcast:
