DDR5 memory: New RAM standard available for the first time

DDR5, memory, RAM, standard, time

Teamgroup has the first RAM with them new DDR5 standard released. The bars, however, are quite expensive: they cost 32.0 gigabytes at PC-King just under 300 dollars. The same capacity with the current DDR4 standard and clock rates from 3,200 MHz is available for about half.

High prices are not uncommon for a new standard, but a roughly doubling of the price is still a bit out of the ordinary. It should be noted, however, that this is the first offer of this kind, which will also be made before the market launch of suitable CPUs and mainboards (more on this in a moment).

The key technical data of the DDR5 kit: The Teamgroup memory kit has 16.0 GB per module with a clock rate of 4,800 MHz and timings of CL40-40-40-77. The latencies are therefore relatively high, which should improve with newer modules. The clock rates should also be clearly higher over time, in theory even peak values above 8,000 MHz are possible.

DDR5 and the importance for gamers

The new standard for RAM is currently not relevant for gamers, as there is still no suitable hardware such as mainboards that would be compatible with DDR5.

Intel’s Alder Lake platform, which will support DDR5 for the first time, is slated to be released towards the end of the year. With Zen4 and Socket AM5, AMD is switching to the new memory standard; the release is expected around mid-2022.

How quickly DDR5 will spread in general and what significance it has for the performance in games, in our opinion, can be found in the following article:
