The Metroidvania hit Dead Cells is now a whopping five years old. There’s also tons of replay value thanks to the roguelike approach. But if you still haven’t had enough, then there’s good news: An animated series is in the works.
The success of Dead Cells should have surprised the developer Motion Twin. The roguelike Metroidvania scored with crisp gameplay and a lot of variety when it was released in 2018, but nobody saw it coming that it sold so well. Over ten million units have now been sold and recently there was even a crossover DLC with the legendary Castlevania series. However, the developers are not thinking of putting on the brakes and are now announcing the next project related to the brand.

Dead Cells will be honored with a real animated series. It will include ten episodes and will be released sometime in 2024. The commissioned studio is not unknown in the industry, so Bobbypills has already animated trailers for Dead Cells in the past. It is also currently working on the recently announced Ubisoft series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.
However, there is a problem, at least for German fans: the series from the Paris-based studio will initially appear exclusively in France. An international release will take place at a later date. The reason for this may be that the French streaming service ADN is also involved in the production.
The official announcement also reveals the first story details: “After the foolish king of the island distributed a cure that turns the population into monstrous creatures, prophecies about a hero with a flame-head appear. As luck would have it, this one is hot-headed hero for real, but saving a kingdom isn’t on his agenda and he just wants to be left alone.”
