In all likelihood, Electronic Arts has decided to leave Dead Space to the emptiness of space for now. Fortunately, there are alternatives, like this fascinating retro game.
Samurai Unicorn actually seems to combine many of the elements that made the groundbreaking Dead Space series successful. But this game also has cyberpunk undertones and a delicious retro patina. Instead, assuming you’re not allergic to excessive blood, look around with a polygon economy.
A Dead Space-like sound that’s off the beaten path
Last month we were saddened to learn that a new game in the groundbreaking Dead Space license may never see the light of day. However, EA Motive, behind the excellent remake of the first work, was mobilized to support Battlefield’s laborious efforts. Regardless, more modest games aim to fill that spatial void in fans’ hearts. This is particularly and surprisingly the case with Samurai Unicorn, first announced in 2020.
This independent game, developed by a very small studio called It’s Got Stealth and whose release date is still unknown, actually cuts out several boxes with the plasma cutter that made Dead Space so successful. Namely the third-person gameplay, where cutting off an enemy’s limbs is the best strategy, and a very organic and disgusting artistic direction that we like. However, the title is characterized by a cyberpunk universe and special powers embodied by this famous samurai unicorn.
Everything should also please fans of retro games Samurai unicorn is presented in a style that saves polygons. We therefore have the impression, not without some displeasure, that we are returning to the era of PS1 games. This intriguing title currently has no release date and is aimed exclusively at PC. A game that is definitely worth checking out if you miss Dead Space and enjoy indulging in retro gaming that mixes something new with something old.
