Death Stranding 2 pulled out all the stops at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 with several short trailers, a preview of a popular feature and details about the game’s cast.
Death Stranding 2 was unfortunately missing from the State of Play on September 24, 2024, but it was for a good cause. Hideo Kojima instead favored Tokyo Game Show 2024 for a fairly long panel with the Japanese cast and director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson…). If you’re waiting for the PS5 release date, be patient, because apparently it wasn’t the right time to reveal it yet, even though that was obviously the original plan. Spoiler alert!!!
Three Death Stranding 2 trailers for the price of one
Death Stranding 2 will arrive in 2025 on PS5 and of course PS5 Pro, but if the date was not announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, a priori it is because of that “unforeseen circumstances”. A timing problem at Sony Interactive Entertainment? Maybe the desire to wait for Rockstar and Take-Two to make the first move with GTA 6? No statement has been made, but we can expect the end of 2025. Last May, Hideo Kojima hinted that the game would be in an “adjustment period” for a year.
As we wait for Death Stranding 2’s release date, the game breaks out of its silence and shows off three trailers. The first is dedicated Fragile (Léa Seydoux) and Tarmana resident doctor and geophysicist, played by George Miller (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), who will play the role of captain of the Magellan while Fragile commands operations. The Magellan is the ship with which the drawbridge crew travels primarily underwater, in the Abyss, the purgatory that lies between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Hence the blue appearance of the characters. We also get to see Sam Porter Bridges distraught when he hears the name Lou, the baby from Death Stranding.
The stop-motion animation puppet modeled on director Fatih Akın’s face has a little name: Dollman. A man who was once a medium who could communicate with the dead and who is trapped in the body of a puppet. The Death Stranding 2 trailers for TGS 2024 also allow you to learn more about the other two characters. Elle Fanning (Teenage spirit) serums Morninga young woman who lived in the realm of the dead during Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2) serums Rainy. Unlike Tomorrow, the latter can give birth, hence her very round belly.
Madness everywhere, even in photo mode
Theories are already emerging among some Reddit members who believe that Tomorrow, in his adult version, could be the “Ha” (body) of Lou, while “Ka” (soul) would be the baby version of this character that accompanied Sat. It is now confirmed that Heartman (Nicolas Winding Refn) will be back. This time he will have an exoskeleton that will allow him not to fall when his heart stops and he explores the Strike World. That’s it for the characters.
However, during the Death Stranding 2 panel, Hideo Kojima revealed another sequence, seen below, that was completely unexpected with Dollman. We see him shaking his hips with Japanese singer Daichi Miura, a scene that will be seen in the final game.
Death Stranding 2 also made a splash with a special photo mode, and no one expected that. In the released excerpt, we see Fragile, Tomorrow and Rainy react to the camera in real time with dynamic movements, animations and ultra-realistic modeling, even if some are disturbed by an uncanny valley side. A photo shoot with music that, according to Kojima-san, could even influence the game’s story.
Kojima Productions also wants to “discreetly” (not) advertise goodies from the official store, such as cryptobiote stuffed animals or an expensive jacket. In addition to this fascinating mode, we should find a more traditional photo mode that doesn’t just focus on the three young women.
