There are just a few weeks left until the world premiere of one of the most ambitious films in recent years: Gladiator 2. The sequel to the Oscar-winning film directed by Ridley Scott promises to revive the coliseum with intense scenes of violence and epic, as well as a narrative that, according to one of its protagonists, evokes one of the best sequels in the history of cinema.
In an interview with the American media Entertainment Tonight, Denzel Washingtonwho plays Macrinus in the film, mentioned that from his perspective Gladiator 2 is not a conventional sequel, but something similar to The Godfather IIin which the present and the past of the Corleones were intertwined.
“I don’t see this as a sequel. I mean, was The Godfather II a sequel as such? The business has changed; filmmakers have had to follow the business, but Ridley is going back in time,” Washington said, hinting that the story could further explore his character’s past or that of other gladiators who inhabited the coliseum.
What is clear is that Ridley Scott has spared no expense for this long-awaited sequel. However, there is widespread fear due to the large number of recent box office failures. Gladiator 2 will hit theaters around the world on November 15, 2024.
