A lot has happened in the graphics card prices in the last three months. They’ve gone in a direction that’s pleasing to players, which is down. In particular, you can get the top models a lot cheaper today than three months ago, as our analysis of regular online trading shows. A similar development has recently been observed on Ebay.
Overall, all of the graphics cards we observed have clearly fallen in price. In fact, the low-end cards are almost approaching their MSRPs. However, the price level remains very high, especially for many fast models. Here the surcharge compared to the UPV is often in the range of 40 to 60 percent.
Our analysis is based on various graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia in five performance classes and their price development according to the comparison portal Geizhals.de. They are examples of the development of the respective models such as the RTX 3080 and the RX 6800 XT.
RTX 3090 and RX 6900 XT: The high-end faction
The price of Nvidia’s current high-end model has fallen sharply over the past three months. Since then, you can get the RTX 3090 Gaming OC from Gigabyte for over 600 dollars less, as the price development at Geizhals shows in the picture below. AMD’s counterpart RX 6900 XT starts from a much lower level, but the price development is also pointing downwards here.
The surcharge on the recommended retail price from AMD and Nvidia has dropped accordingly:
graphic card | Surcharge on RRP three months ago | Surcharge to RRP today |
---|---|---|
RTX 3090 | 71 percent | 32 percent |
RX 6900 XT | 40 percent | 19 percent |
RTX 3080 (10 GB) and RX 6800 XT: powerful and popular
This category offers similar performance as the top models at a significantly lower (but still very high) price. In the case of the Zotac Gaming RTX 3080 Trinity OC LHR, it has fallen by several hundred dollars in recent months, and the same applies to the MSI RX 6800 XT Gaming X Trio:
Three months ago, the surcharge for Zotac’s RTX 3080 and MSI’s 6800 XT was more than 100 percent compared to the RRP. This number has since decreased significantly:
graphic card | Surcharge on RRP three months ago | Surcharge to RRP today |
---|---|---|
RTX 3080 (10 GB) | 106 percent | 49 percent |
RX 6800 XT | 97 percent | 45 percent |
RTX 3070 and RX 6700 XT: Also a lot cheaper
The Dual Geforce RTX 3070 V2 from Asus has fallen relatively far below the 1,000 euro mark, but there is still a long way to go before the RRP of 549 dollars. The same applies to the RX 6700 XT Mech 2X from MSI, albeit in slightly lower price regions.
With a view to the RRP, the development of the two models in the performance class above is similar. So over the past three months, the premium has gone from regions in the 100 percent range to around 50 to 60 percent.
graphic card | Surcharge on RRP three months ago | Surcharge to RRP today |
---|---|---|
RTX 3070 | 109 percent | 57 percent |
RX 6700 XT | 91 percent | 47 percent |
RTX 3060 and RX 6600 XT: Good middle class
We also see the same trend with the RTX 3060 from Nvidia, here using the example of the EVGA RTX 3060 XC Gaming, which has become around 300 dollars cheaper. The RX 6600 XT Dual OC from Asus comes at a price that is around 200 dollars lower.
For both cards, this means a clear approximation of the RRP, but the gap is significantly smaller for the Radeon model than for the Nvidia card.
graphic card | Surcharge on RRP three months ago | Surcharge to RRP today |
---|---|---|
RTX 3060 | 149 percent | 61 percent |
RX 6600 XT | 90 percent | 31 percent |
RTX 3050 and RX 6500 XT: The newcomers in the low-end segment
Nvidia’s RTX 3050 and AMD’s RX 6500 XT are still fairly new to the market, so we can only compare prices from last month. But here, too, the same trend can be seen as with the faster and longer available cards:
In a comparison of the performance classes, both entry-level cards come closest to their RRP, which in the case of the much-criticized Radeon model even means that the RRP has almost been reached:
graphic card | Surcharge on RRP three months ago | Surcharge to RRP today |
---|---|---|
RTX 3050 | 62 percent | 25 percent |
RX 6500 XT | 33 percent | 8 percent |
Conclusion: Prices have fallen sharply in the last three months
The trend of the last three months is clear: It went downhill and you can currently get graphics cards cheaper than they have for a long time. It is difficult to say whether this trend will continue, especially since a similar level had already been reached in mid-2021 and prices then rose sharply again.
Nevertheless, it would of course be nice to see prices moving closer to the RRP. Here you can find out how you can find out whether you need a new graphics card at all and which new models are still awaiting us this year:
Have you already struck at these prices or are you hoping that the prices will drop even further? And is it still worth upgrading to this generation from your point of view if the new generation is to be released this year? Let us know in the comments!
