This is official; Eldon Ring is FromSoft’s largest steam Launched so far. The iconic studio’s latest game has attracted more than 750,000 concurrent Steam players — despite the growing number of negative user reviews surrounding the game due to its questionable PC performance.
Publisher Bandai Namco has yet to announce the game’s official launch sales (it will easily exceed 1,000,000 at launch if it’s based on PC numbers alone), but we’ve seen Steam alone be a huge success at this point.
On launch day, Elden Ring peaked at 764,835 concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB. You can see how exciting those numbers are on PC when you consider that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has an all-time high of 125,315 players, and Dark Souls 3 has 129,975 players.
Will Elden Ring be the sixth Steam game to attract over 1,000,000 concurrent players over the weekend? We’ll have to wait and see, but it seems possible.
But it’s not all good news. Due to its performance on PC, the game attracted a lot of negative reviews on Steam. According to Digital Foundry, Elden Ring’s performance is a bit “mixed” right now, which is an understatement.
For PC users, even with patch 1.02 available, there will be a stutter of up to 250ms when “new effects, enemies and areas appear on screen”.
Stuttering decreases as the game progresses, but the “second more general stuttering” seems to be related to loading new game areas, as moving from one area to the next can cause minor one-time frame drops. In the worst case, there is a “frame time issue” that drops the frame rate from 60 to 40 seconds.
A cursory look at the Steam reviews (over 7000 of which are negative) shows that these performance issues haven’t gone away with PC gamers. Still, preventing more than half a million people from playing the game at the time of writing isn’t bad enough.
