News culture Despite the failure of Asterix and Obelix The Middle Kingdom, a new film is in preparation…
The most famous Gauls in the history of modern culture haven’t made enough headlines yet: we’ve just learned of the production of a new live-action film.
Oh my horse
Asterix is a business that has existed s ince 1959: first in comics style, of course, then in cinema with cartoons and films, the first by Claude Zidi dates back to 1999. Since then there have been several sequels : the legendary Mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat in Year 2002 (the best and most unbeatable, from a critical and commercial point of view), Asterix at the 2008 Olympic Games, Asterix and Obelix at His Majesty’s Service in 2012… then the episode The Middle Kingdom in 2023.
The latter caused a great stir: the film was signed by Guillaume Canet, who also plays the title role of Obélix alongside Gilles Lellouche. The film particularly shined with an absolutely breathtaking cast with countless national stars… and even international ones (Zlatan Ibrahimović, for example). The budget was also huge at 66 million dollars, making it the sixth most expensive French film in history.
The problem is that this French blockbuster received a lukewarm reception from critics. The press gives it an average of 2.5 out of 5 on Allociné and, above all, it brings in just over 46 million dollars at the worldwide box office, which is not enough to make the investment profitable. Nevertheless, with 4.6 million tickets sold, it remains the biggest success of the year for a French production in the country.
It starts again
Success or not, Canal+ firmly believes in licensing: we have just learned the start of work on a brand new live-action film through its subsidiary StudioCanal. The latter has also designed a unique label called “StudioCanal Stories”, a branch dedicated to adaptations of literary works. This next Asterix feature film will therefore serve to “inaugurate” this whole thing in style.announces the head of the Canal+ group Maxime Saada.
On the other hand, We don’t know much more: neither who will direct, nor who played Asterix or Obelix. Patience is therefore essential and we remember in passing that an animated series Le Combat des chefs adapted from Asterix is planned, directed by Alain Chabat. Enough to arouse the curiosity of many fans of the Gauls.
