Destiny 2 is currently in its tenth year, and Bungie has promised more content for its 11th year, but it will apparently focus more on “worldbuilding” rather than linear narrative.
Earlier this month, Bungie revealed the future of Destiny 2 without mentioning Destiny 3 at all, but promised that “the journey continues” with the release of the game codenamed Frontiers in 2025. It’s unclear what this means for the shooter at the moment, but in a recent interview with Edge magazine (via GamesRadar), discussing the making of the game’s latest expansion, Final Form, and what’s next for Destiny 2, more light was shed on what’s to come. “Everything in Year 10 was a catalyst for what’s next for Destiny 2,” Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens explained in the interview. “Some of these threads will carry over into the future.”

He continued: “What I really want to emphasize is that we’re moving away from the linear narrative approach of Destiny 2, which we call ‘TV show storytelling’ internally, towards more self-contained experiences and episodes that are easier to jump into and easier to engage in. So you don’t have to know everything that’s going on beforehand to enjoy that story and experience.
“A lot of thinking about year 11 and how we really start to get into the next journey after these chapters, we’re going to lean into that idea as well. Because we’ve been doing this linear thing for a while, we want to get back to expanding our world and worldbuilding, expanding the universe of Destiny. I guess that’s what I should say.”
Essentially, don’t expect a big storyline advancement, as it sounds like things will be smaller in scope. I don’t know about you, but it does sound like a good time to prepare for a sequel. Stevens added that Bungie has “big plans” for Year 11 and that “ultimately, those plans will come to fruition,” so it sounds like there’s still life in the beloved shooter.
