Chooms, sharpen your implants: Because there is big news at CD Projekt Red. After the development team recently revealed that Phantom Liberty is the only planned story DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR now announces a genuine successor on Twitter! Here’s what we already know about Project Orion.

What is Project Orion?

On Twitter, CD Projekt briefly outlines what it’s about: Projekt Orion is supposed to advance the cyberpunk franchise and unleash the full potential of this dark future scenario and to all appearances will become a full-fledged successor to the RPG:

A strategy paper goes on to say that the Cyberpunk successor is to be developed by the newly founded Studio CD Projekt Red North America. The existing Vancouver team will work together with the newly formed team from Boston. This expansion of the development team is necessary in order to implement the great ambitions and to draw on the full for the sequel.

In the investor call on October 4, 2022, the developers also announced that work on Project Orion had not yet started. The focus is currently on the Phantom Liberty expansion. Only then should work on the successor begin.

When asked whether Project Orion will contain a multiplayer mode, the developers are still cryptic: Some of the announced projects will be expanded with multiplayer elements in the future. However, they do not want to announce exactly what they are at the moment. It remains to be seen whether we will be able to hunt down Cyberpsychos together with our friends in the future.

What’s next for Cyberpunk 2077?

After Cyberpunk 2077 got off to a rocky start two years ago, the role-playing game is currently setting new record numbers thanks to the Netflix series and Update 1.6. The release period for the successor has not yet been announced, Next up for Night City is the big story DLC Phantom Liberty. This is due to appear in 2023.
