It’s been pretty quiet around Sons of the Forest. After several months of silence, the developers showed quite a lot of new gameplay for the upcoming survival hit, but remained silent as to whether the release in February 2023 was realistic. Now we also know why: the release doesn’t quite hit the mark.
In a blog post, the devs talk about the release state of the game. The good news first: Sons of the Forest is scheduled to release on February 23, 2023 on Steam. However, not completely.
Early Access statt Full Release
Originally, Sons of the Forest was going to be released as a full version, but that plan has now been overturned. The game starts in Early Access so that the developers can continue to work on it after release. In the Blog-Posting it says as follows:
Development on Sons of the Forest started a long, long time ago and has now grown into the largest project we have ever undertaken. There are still so many things we want to add – items, new mechanics, gameplay balance and more. We don’t want to postpone the game again, so we decided to involve the community in the development. Sons of the Forest will be released on February 23rd, but in Early Access.
What’s in the Early Access version?
Because Sons of the Forest was originally planned as a full version, there is a lot in the early access release. You can already play the complete story in single and multiplayer with up to seven other players. The new building system, spooky caves, dynamic weather changes and seasons, the very weird AI companions, enemies – all this will appear in the game by the end of February.

What is Sons of the Forest about?
The developers are planning many more items, mechanics, story features and, and, and by the end of the early access phase. As with its predecessor, they want to develop it in close cooperation with the community.
How long does Early Access last? And will the game be more expensive?
The devs are currently not planning any price increases for the final release. Early access is expected to last six to eight months. With a bit of luck, early access grouches will have the final game in their virtual hands by the end of the year.
