Hideaki Gono, who directed many games including the Devil May Cry series and Dragon’s Dogma, has left Capcom after working at the game developer for 30 years.
Dragon’s Dogma 2, the sequel to 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma, was only released in March this year, but five months later, Itsuno announced that he will no longer work at Capcom at the end of this month. “I have an announcement to make to everyone who follows me,” Itsuno wrote on his personal Twitter account. “At the end of August 2024, I will be leaving Capcom after 30 years and 5 months. Thank you for your long-term support of the games and characters I have been responsible for. I hope you will continue to support Capcom’s games and characters.”

This will obviously be a bit sad for fans of Itsuno’s work at Capcom, but it’s not all bad news, as the developer went on to say: “Starting in September, I’ll begin development on a new game in a new setting. I hope to create fun, beautiful games that are as memorable as or even more memorable than the ones I’ve created so far. Stay tuned for my next work! ” Considering Itsuno said he’ll start working on it in September, it might be a while before we see the results, so don’t get too excited just yet.

Itsuno started out at Capcom as a director and co-director on fighting games like School of Fate: United Fate and Power Stone, before taking over as director on Devil May Cry 2 and directing every other major entry in the series except the reboot. Of course, he also directed Dragon’s Dogma, as did this year’s sequel, a game so brilliant that our own Alex called it one of the greatest games ever made in his review, provided you have the right constitution.
