Disco Eylsium turned out to be an absolute insider tip at the time and received lots of excellent reviews. The development studio isn’t doing really well, so they had to stop making a new game entirely.
A few years ago, Disco Elysium collected a number of awards and excellent reviews; In addition, the title was also quite popular among gaming circles. Nevertheless, things aren’t going as well as one might have expected after the game’s surprise success at the ZA/UM development studio.
How GLHF Now reported, the studio had to completely discontinue its new game and is also being hit by a wave of layoffs. According to this, around 24 employees will probably be put on the street, which corresponds to around 25 percent of the entire workforce at ZA/UM.
The layoffs go “hand in hand” with the discontinuation of the new title Project X7, which would have been a standalone expansion to Disco Elysium. According to ZA/UM President Ed Tomaszewski, X7 would have taken about “one to two years” to complete. This will no longer happen.
CEO Ilmar Kompus addressed the employees in a message GLHF is present. Accordingly, joint efforts had been made over the past eight months, but ultimately, after consultations with the management team, the difficult decision had to be made to discontinue X7. “Unfortunately, unlike the pause on Project P1, this decision will most likely also lead to layoffs within our studio,” it continues.
After the game was stopped, the team now wanted to be reorganized in order to provide the best possible support for the two remaining games. The layoffs primarily affect X7 developers, but also other employees who are not part of development teams.
At ZA/UM the two projects with the code names C4 and M0 are still in progress. It is not known when we can expect an official announcement of the titles.
