This weekend, this year’s D23 took place in Anaheim, California, Disney’s in-house showcase for all kinds of big announcements and fan panels. During the presentation, the studio unveiled numerous new projects, but also announced sequels to popular series such as Tron and Frozen.
Star Wars, as Disney’s most important brand, also played a prominent role at D23Among other things, the company showed a first trailer for the upcoming series Skeleton Crew with British star actor Jude Law.
However, anyone looking for the classic animated musicals that made the company famous in Disney’s release schedule for the next few years will probably be disappointed. Instead, Disney is now focusing entirely on 3D graphics and live-action adaptations of its classics.
We have summarized the most important announcements, sequels and trailers of the D23 for you:
Mufasa: The Lion King

With Mufasa: The Lion King
It has been known for some time that one of the greatest Disney classics of all time is set to receive a sequel this year. Strictly speaking, the upcoming live-action/CGI film is a prequel, as it tells the story of Mufasa’s early life and how Simba’s father became the Lion King.
At D23, Disney presented a new trailer for the prequel, which we have embedded above. The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 19, 2024.
Lilo and Stitch
A live-action or CGI adaptation of Lilo and Stitch is set to be released on the film. As the studio announced, the new version of the animated adventure from 2002 will be shown in international cinemas next summer. There was at least a short teaser at the D23.
The film is about the cute creature Stitch/Experiment 626, who is banished from his home planet Turo and ends up with the outsider Stitch on the island of Hawaii, who takes Stitch in as a pet.

Snow White
Disney does the same with its classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937. The material, which is based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm, is set to hit theaters next spring. The main roles are played by Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The dwarves are computer-animated this time.

Moana 2

Another Disney hit, however, is getting a sequel: Moana, better known here as Vaina. In the new film, the Polynesian heroine receives an unexpected call from her ancestors, who show her the way to a secret, storm-swept island. The key to bringing the inhabitants of all the islands in the Pacific together is said to be hidden there.
Vaiana 2 will be released in Europe cinemas on November 27th.
Toy Story 5

There hasn’t been more than a tiny teaser for the sequel to Toy Story so far, But the message is clear: The well-known children’s film series about the toy heroes Woody, Buzz and Jessie will be continued. According to Disney, the new part will be about the conflict between real toys and technology that compete for the attention of their owners.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2026.
Frozen 3 and Zootopia 2
Frozen and Zootopia are also to be continuedalso two very successful Disney brands. While there is no official trailer for either film online yet, the release dates for the sequels have already been revealed.
Frozen Elsa is said to back on the big screen in 2027 magic, rabbit policewoman Judy Hopps determined as early as November 2025 back in the cinema.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Skeleton Crew: The first trailer for the new Star Wars series is here – and completely different than expected
We already mentioned at the beginning that Star Wars fans have received a first trailer for Skeleton Crew. The youth series is about a group of children who are stranded on an old Jedi spaceship at the other end of the galaxy and have to find a way home. They are supported by Jedi Master Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law).
Skeleton Crew is scheduled to launch on Disney Plus on December 3rd.
The Mandalorian and Grogu
Instead of another series season, the popular Star Wars series The Mandalorian will soon be continued in cinemas.
The Mandalorian & Groguand will be launched in 2026.
In addition to the return of Baby Yoda, fans can also look forward to seeing another favorite: Zeb Orrelios from the animated series Rebels. Disney has not yet released any official images for the film.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Not much is known about the new Avatar film yet, as there was no real trailer for the upcoming Pandora adventure at D23. However, director James Cameron showed some artwork during the presentation and revealed the title of the sequel: Avatar: Fire and Ashes

The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 19, 2025.

Tron: Ares
Another sequel that was presented to the public for the first time at D23 is Tron 3, which has the additional name Ares
The fact that the series, despite the poor box office results of its predecessor, Legacy is considered surprising. Nevertheless, series star Jeff Bridges returns in his role as programmer Kevin Flynn.
Tron: Ares is scheduled to hit theaters on October 10, 2025. The embedded tweet from a panel visitor gives you a first look at the film.
