Disney Plus will soon present you with a tough choice: more expensive or with advertising

Advertising, Choice, Disney, expensive, present, tough

Disney Plus is changing its subscription model drastically. As the streaming provider has now officially announced, the new subscription with advertising will initially be available in the USA and will be activated on December 8, 2022. The nasty surprise: Unlike Netflix, which has also already announced an advertising subscription at a lower price, Disney Plus will not be cheaper with advertising.

It is not yet officially known when and under what conditions the new model will also land in Europey, but the change in the USA gives the first indications of what subscribers may soon be able to expect in this country.

This is how the new model works

From December there will be two models for Disney Plus in the USA. The “Basic” version for $7.99 a month and the “Premium” version for $10.99 a month. For the basic subscription, users pay the same price as before, only that they will be switched to advertising blocks in the future. If you want to continue using Disney Plus ad-free, you have no choice but to switch to the more expensive premium version.

Here in Europey, Disney Plus currently costs 8.99 dollars per month, which is already slightly more expensive than the US version. ($7.99 is equivalent to approximately $7.72)

There will also be advertising on Amazon Prime and Netflix

The streaming competitor Amazon Prime recently announced its big price increase, but also launched a free program called Freevee, which works as an alternative with advertising blocks.

Netflix, on the other hand, has also announced a subscription version with advertising, which will not be free of charge, but will at least be a little cheaper than the previous standard price.

In any case, hardware colleague Alex has had enough of streaming services. In his column, he tells you why he left Disney Plus, Amazon and Netflix:

Goodbye streaming - why I don't feel like watching Netflix and Co. anymore

Peter, on the other hand, sees the whole thing a little more positively. He has not yet canceled his Disney Plus subscription because of exactly 6 films and series.

Why are we reporting on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus & Co.?

In addition to video games, the majority of our GameStar community is also interested in streaming. We have also observed that recommendations from our editorial staff – even beyond gaming – are always well received by you. In the future, we want to provide you with personal tips on films and series and scour the streaming providers for content that could also be exciting from a player perspective.

That’s why we give you, for example, an overview of all the new films and series on Amazon Prime, tell you which movies you can stream on Disney Plus, or give you expert tips on the best documentaries on Netflix.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that GameStar loses its gaming focus. We are and will remain a gaming site – but thinking outside the box from time to time is hopefully enriching for you, but of course also for us.

What is your opinion on the new pricing model? If it also comes to Europe, will you watch Disney Plus with advertising, go for the premium version or cancel your subscription completely? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
