News culture Disney+ recorded a loss of more than a million subscribers at the end of 2023: the reason is obvious. Netflix can rub its hands together
The days when video-on-demand platforms were unrivaled are long gone. At a time when services are increasing, some are seriously starting to pay the price. And among other things, Disney+ will become expensive in 2023.
A decision with serious consequences
As streaming players wage an all-out battle, many have decided to increase their prices. From Netflix to Disney+ to Amazon Prime Video, subscribers have been grim in recent months as they learned their wallets would be even lighter. Disney may have thought its 100th anniversary year would be a record-breaking year, but the opposite was true. By examining the financial results of Mickey’s House, Variety managed to quantify the loss of subscribers in the last quarter of 2023, and the number is simply dizzying! Variety reports that 1.3 million subscribers left Disney+ was undoubtedly affected by the price increase in the last three months of 2023.
As it stands, Disney+ remains below the 150 million subscriber mark (149.6 exactly taking into account the Indian offshoot Disney+ Core, which offers lower prices). For comparison: Netflix has 260 million subscribers and Amazon Prime Video has now reached 200 million subscribers. By focusing on the Star Wars and Marvel universes, Disney+ has hit hard and expected positive feedback from subscribers. But the bribery did not have its full effect and Disney, like its competitors, made rejection decisions, which caused great displeasure. Does this mean Disney has a clear position against Netflix and Amazon Prime Video? Nothing is less safe.
2024, the revival for Disney+?
By multiplying its offerings, Disney+ should benefit from major growth this new year, as the company’s management expects between 5.5 and 6 million additional subscribers. If we rely on the impact of the Netflix price increase (and the removal of password sharing), it led to a sudden drop in the number of subscribers, but this situation was temporary. In the weeks and months that followed, more than 6 million accounts were opened on Netflix! The fact is that Disney+ has to do a lot to reach as many people as possible with its programs. We can only hope that the WandaVision spin-off or X-Men ’97 lives up to expectations!
