News culture Disney regains color in France: after the success of Vice-Versa 2, French audiences offer Deadpool and Wolverine the second best start to 2024
2023 was, to say the least, a complicated year for Disney, which recorded a series of poor performances, if not failures. However, 2024 seems to be much kinder to the American entertainment giant. After Vice-Versa 2, this is another film from Disney studios that is a hit in France. It has just received the title of “second best start to 2024”, just behind the film produced by Pixar studios.
Deadpool and Wolverine rob France
Marvel Studios is betting big on Deadpool and Wolverine to revitalize a Marvel Cinematic Universe that has been losing momentum for five years. After the death of Thanos and the end of the Infinity Stones arc, the MCU is struggling to hold the interest of the general public. Even fans are slowly but surely losing interest in Disney’s superhero projects, as evidenced by the box office failures of The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as the lack of attention given to the Secret Invasion series on Disney+.
In 2024, the tide turns for Disney, which can finally breathe a sigh of relief after a difficult accounting period. The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ready to fill the North American company’s coffers. On French territory alone, Deadpool & Wolverine attracted 265,475 viewers on its first day (these results include previews), making it the second best box office release of 2024 just behind Vice-Versa 2 with 527,500 “Day One” (including 226,000 previews). With such a promising start, the new adventures of Wade Wilson and Logan in the multiverse could easily reach a billion at the international box office. To be continued.
Reversed 2, undivided rule
The excellent first day of Vice-Versa 2 in France shows the unprecedented appeal of the new project from Pixar Studios to the general public. As a direct sequel to Vice-Versa, the film recorded 6.872 million admissions in France alone. And the phenomenon does not stop in France either. In fact, Inside Out 2 of its original title is officially the most successful animated film of all time, surpassing the supposedly unbeatable Frozen 2 : $1.46 billion earned at the worldwide box office, compared to $1.45 billion for The Adventures of Elsa.
Taking into account live-action films, “Vice-Versa 2” slips to number thirteen of the biggest box office hits and comes dangerously close to Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick”. With the theatrical release still several weeks away, there is no doubt that the latest Pixar film will climb several notches and why not enter the TOP 10.
Here is the synopsis for Vice-Versa 2:
Riley has just graduated and is now a teenager, but not without causing a huge uproar at headquarters, which is faced with something unexpected: the arrival of new emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust – which have long been successful – don’t quite know how to react when fear appears. And it seems she’s not the only one… – Disney
