Zenless Zone Zero may have been compared to Persona 5 for its urban fantasy anime aesthetic, but producer Lee Jin-woo has revealed that Digimon was a far greater influence on his creative vision for the upcoming HoYoverse title than Atlus’ blockbuster JRPG series.
“We happened to choose the city theme, and for some players, they might find city-themed games very similar,” Lee said of the comparison to Persona in an interview conducted through a translator. “However, if you look deeper into the game, you’ll find a lot of differences.”

While he doesn’t outright deny the influence of Persona, Lee clearly prefers to talk about a very different game series that he did consciously draw inspiration from during the making of ZZZ: “I drew inspiration from Digimon because I used to play it a lot when I was a kid.” He goes on to elaborate on one of the ways that Digimon directly influenced Zenless Zone Zero:[in] Our time system, you will encounter different events at different times [of the in-game day]All of this is [I] Get inspired [for] From Digimon World.
However, while Digimon inspired the design of the game’s setting and exploration, the main inspiration for Zenless Zone Zero’s combat is something else entirely – although it may not be that surprising to find inspiration in an action role-playing game. “As a big fan of Street Fighter VI, I’ve always wanted to be a part of Zenless Zone Zero. I’ve always wanted to be a part of Zenless Zone Zero, but … [I have] “I’ve literally spent thousands of hours on this series,” Lee continued, when asked about the influence of other games. “One thing [I] What I did learn a lot was the feedback of the movements, such as how to make each punch really feel like it hits the flesh.”
When asked if he’d like to see ZZZ crossover with other games, like Genshin Impact did with Horizon Zero Dawn a few years ago, Lee said no, but not for the boring corporate reasons you might think. “My problem is that it’s hard for me to make choices,” he admitted. “Personally, I [I have] There are many favorites […] It’s something I really need time to do.”
Zenless Zone Zero will be released on PC, PS5, and mobile devices on July 4. Switch and Xbox ports are on the creator’s personal wish list, but they are not officially in production yet.
