Marvel’s What If? sounds like it will wrap up after three seasons, so don’t expect the usual excitement for the MCU’s multiverse outside of the main movies and TV series.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is still working on the multiverse as a whole, but the Disney+ series What If? offers a host of alternate universes and, as the name suggests, “what if” scenarios. None of these are all that important to the wider MCU shenanigans, though it does introduce us to Captain Carter ahead of her live-action debut, as it’s more than just a bit of fun to ponder these specific scenarios. It looks like that’s all going to come to an end soon, however, as Marvel’s head of streaming, TV, and animation Brad Windbaum recently appeared on the new Official Marvel Podcast to talk about the show.

“[What If…? season 3] “It feels like the end of a trilogy,” Windbaum said on the podcast. “It takes us places you never thought possible. It goes beyond the first two seasons and the exploration of the multiverse and introduces very unexpected characters, and it makes for a very moving and satisfying ending, I think, for Watchmen.” This seems to be good news for fans of the mysterious Watcher, a fan-favorite character in the comics who does exactly what the comics say he does.

A third season of What If? is in the works, but it doesn’t have a release date yet. It was previously rumored to be coming out in late 2024, but you’ll have to keep an eye out. This new podcast seems to have a lot of new tidbits about the MCU, as it also confirmed that the upcoming Fantastic Four movie is actually set in the ’60s, although it may just be in an alternate universe.
