There’s no firm indication yet of when we’ll get to see a live-action Zelda movie, but Nintendo has at least narrowed it down a bit.
Nearly a year ago today, Nintendo announced, unsurprisingly, that it would be adapting the Legend of Zelda series into a movie. The slightly surprising element (or more interesting in this case) is that Sony will be producing it, and it will be…live action. Of course, the choice was made there, but either way there hasn’t been much news about it since then, i.e. no word on a release date. I’m sorry to say, still not, but as part of Nintendo’s corporate management policy briefing, there was at least a rough indication of when we can expect it: 202X.

Well, yes, that’s still vague since that would be anywhere between 2025 and 2029, but considering how long these processes usually take and the fact that the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel is set to be released in 2026 I’d downplay the fact that I’d bet myself it wouldn’t come out any earlier than 2027. It’s not all bad news, though! With such a vague release window, Nintendo could easily change course and make it the animated movie it deserves to be, rather than the “grounded” shoot that director Wes Ball apparently planned (yes, I know that’s a whitewash) daydream, but let me have it).
As part of these briefings, Nintendo also reiterated that a Switch 2 (or whatever it’s called) release will still happen before the end of this fiscal year, but one analyst now thinks it’s unlikely before 2025. Still, at least Nintendo has also confirmed that the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility, so you don’t need to give up your games (which would be a weird thing to do anyway, and a real waste of money).
