Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 documentary PsychOdyssey has just released its final episode, concluding the game’s years-long journey.
Back in 2023, beloved indie developer Double Fine released a 32-episode series covering the entire development of Psychonauts 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to the PS2/Xbox original. It tracked the game’s development from the very beginning, and by that I mean when they were still throwing around ideas, and it gave a very unique look at the hardships of game development that you can’t get almost anywhere else. Now, Double Fine has released the final episode of PsychOdyssey, chronicling what happened after the game’s release, including a reflection on some of the series’ more dramatic moments.
Psychonauts 2 had a rocky development process. Double Fine launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2016 through Fig, a crowdfunding platform specifically for video games that allowed backers to receive a share of future revenue from future projects (the company was dissolved in 2023). It wasn’t actually released until 2021, but was actually received quite positively – Ty gave iGamesNews a perfect score in his review upon release.

Microsoft also apparently acquired Double Fine in 2019, which was another big change for a company that had been completely independent since its founding. The developer hasn’t released or announced any other games since Psychonauts 2, though it still regularly hosts Double Fine Presents livestreams to showcase other cool indie games. This puts it in a questionable position, especially considering Microsoft’s layoffs earlier this year, as well as the closure of studios like Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin.
If you do want to take a closer look at the development of Psychonauts 2, though, you can watch the entire series on YouTube, or you can pick up the just-released Blu-ray set, which will be available later this year via Limited Run Games.
