The well-known streamer Dr. Disrespect has now confirmed the allegations surrounding his Twitch ban that have been making headlines online in recent days – and more and more colleagues and companies are now distancing themselves from him.
Dr. Disrespect is considered one of the biggest names in the streaming and influencer business around gaming, so there was a lot of excitement when he was suddenly banned from Twitch in 2020 after a financially rich deal. In recent days, the alleged background to this step has become public, according to which Dr. Disrespect is said to have messaged a minor in a sexual context on the platform. Now Guy Beahm aka Dr. Disrespect has published a statement via social media and admits the allegations.
In his detailed statement on X, Dr. Disrespect apologized to his community, his team and all colleagues at the developer studio Midnight Society, of which he is or was co-founder, but there is still a real lack of complete and sincere remorse:
“Everyone wanted to know why I was banned from Twitch, but for reasons beyond my control, I was kept silent for the past few years. Now, after two former Twitch employees have publicly made allegations, I can tell you my side of the story regarding the ban,” said Dr. Disrespect, before confirming: “Were there Twitch messages to a minor in 2017? The answer is yes. Was there any real intent behind those messages? The answer is absolutely not. They were random, consensual conversations that sometimes went too far in an inappropriate direction, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no images were sent, and no crimes were committed. And I never met with that person.”
The reason why he himself had not said anything about the allegations for a long time was a long-running legal dispute with Twitch, which had since been settled through a settlement. This concerned outstanding payments and the financial damage that Dr. Disrespect had suffered due to the Twitch ban.
“Let me be clear: There was no criminal case against me and no criminal charges were ever filed against me,” he continues. Although he takes full responsibility for his behavior in the X-Statement and admits that it was pretty stupid, he also downplays the issue in some passages.
This, in turn, is denounced by two of his colleagues, Nickmercs and TimTheTatman, in video statements on X, who describe such behavior towards minors as an absolute absurdity – even if in this case there was apparently no criminal relevance.
Incidentally, Dr. Disrespect’s partners apparently see it that way too, because after the development studio Midnight Society, which he co-founded, distanced itself from him yesterday, Turtle Beach has now followed suit. The manufacturer of gaming peripherals has worked with Dr. Disrespect several times in the past and even brought a specially designed headset for the popular ex-Twitch streamer onto the market. A previously signed multi-year deal with Beahm for the company’s own ROCCAT brand will no longer be continued.
