Before we give our opinion Dragon Ball Super: Superhero, let’s remember the synopsis of the film. After the events of the anime Dragon Ball great and from Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the Red Ribbon Army, main antagonist of the first part of dragon ballis back. At their head we find Magenta, the son of General Red, who was the leader of the organization when Goku crushed it as a child. In order to restore the structure to its past grandeur, he decides to send Dr. Hedo, the grandson of Dr. Recruiting Gero, the creator of C-16, C-17, C–18 and especially Cell, to develop new and equally powerful androids.
This is how Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 are made, which will attack Son Goku and his friends, with Dr. Hedo is convinced they represent an alien conspiracy to invade the world. Unfortunately, in the absence of Kakarott and Vegeta, who left to train on Whis and Beerus’ planet, It’s up to Piccolo to protect the earth and he’s counting on Son Gohan to help him in this fight. Aside from its visual orientation, which we’ll come back to, Dragon Ball Super: Superhero is a major feature film for the franchise dragon ball since Akira Toriyama, the author of the original work, seems to have worked with his son Sasuke Toriyama to pass the torch to him.
CGI, visual success or failed experience?
The great originality of superheroit is above all that it is the first film dragon ball be produced entirely in computer-generated images. Before that, we recall that a very short sequence in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, during the fight between Broly and Gogeta , used this technique. A decision that has sparked a lot of conversation on social media since computer-generated animation is still struggling to win over the public in the Japanese industry. After much controversy It is clear that frankly the rendering is well done and that the animation of the fights is impressive. Thanks to the use of this technique we thought we were in front of a modern video game with cel-shaded graphics, a bit like Dragon Ball FighterZ but even more detailed. Of particular note are the decorations of the Red Ribbon Army’s base, which is particularly successful with these futuristic buildings hidden in a colorful natural environment.
However, If the film consists mostly of computer-generated images, in some places we find “old-style” animated passages.. First of all it’s the case of the great intro sequence that summarizes Son Goku’s fight against the Red Ribbon Army, from his childhood to Cell as you can see here since the Toei aired the beginning of the movie to promote it. In addition, we find hand animations for small things like flashbacks or video calls, which is quite surprising since the rendering stands out slightly from the overall feature film. An amazing decision, then, but nothing serious either.
Nevertheless, We can still make a few reservations about certain optical aspects. If the whole part on Earth with Piccolo and Son Gohan taking on the Red Ribbon Army is graphically impressive, we’d have some reservations about its brief passage showing Son Goku and Vegeta training. There is something special about the 3D models of our two Saiyans, especially in terms of their hair, which looks much higher than in the base anime. But beyond that particular passage, we must acknowledge that animation in computer graphics is an open success here.

Dragon Ball Super: Superhero, Subterfuge Scenario or Captivating Storyline?
As for his story Dragon Ball Super: Superhero comes out of what we’re used to seeing in the original anime by removing the Goku-Vegeta duo from the plot. Thanks for that it is Piccolo who is at the center of the plot and clearly takes on the role of the main character. Instead of a long confrontation (as we could see at Dragon Ball Super: Broly once the Bardock sequence is over), we are entitled to phases of infiltration and investigation as Piccolo attempts to understand what is happening. And then, in preparation for the final fight, it’s an opportunity to see many familiar faces, becoming more and more discreet Dragon Ball great for example, just to do a bit of fan service.
If the final confrontation is satisfactory, beyond the quality of its animation, so is it because it highlights characters who have become discreet, since the power level of the work’s enemies borders on the divine. So we are in exactly the same situation as at the beginning of the film. Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of ‘F’ in which the Z Fighters try to buy time against Frieza’s army while awaiting the arrival of Son Goku and Vegeta, or during the Universe Survival arc in which many fighters clash during the Tournament of Power. All of these characters in the background work together as equals to overcome the terrifying final boss, which is also announced at the beginning of the film.
If the scenario Dragon Ball Super: Superhero thus brings a little something new to Akira Toriyama’s work, it’s not without its flaws either. The famous light tone of Dragon Ball great Whoever bothered more than one during the airing of the original anime is still present here, with sometimes confusing situations given the gravity of the events. who saw the film We’re thinking in particular of Bulma asking Shenron to make her more beautiful, while the wishes could be used to overcome the Red Bond by bringing Goku and Vegeta back as suggested after Piccolo. The other thing that bothered us was how Piccolo tries to motivate Son Gohan to fight back and regain his former potential. This decision is also surprising when you know the nature of the character, and also seems completely irresponsible given the seriousness of the situation.

Finally a movie as effective as Dragon Ball Super: Broly?
After we said all that It must be recognized that the events of Dragon Ball Super: Superhero do not have much impact on the universe of dragon ball and that the latter raises questions regarding the manga’s chronology. That we understand each other is obvious that the feature film takes place after the anime Dragon Ball great etc Dragon Ball Super: Broly as evidenced by Broly’s presence on Whis and Beerus’ planet and that the manga and anime do not share the same exact timeline. However, if the anime is to be adapted back to the manga’s story, it may get stuck at certain points. Please note that the following remark refers to events taking place after the Universe Survival arc. In the manga, during the Moro arc, Son Gohan and Piccolo are juxtaposed with the Wizard’s troops on Earth who manage to defeat them. But if Dragon Ball Super: Superhero If done before then, our two heroes should be able to use their new super powerful transformations, Orange Piccolo and Gohan Beast, which allowed them to beat Cell Max. The same observation in case the movie takes place after the Moro arc that we saw in the manga would also cause a problem as its events are never referenced during the movie.
and Dragon Ball Super: Superhero isn’t defining for the anime’s story, but remains entertaining for its bold graphics in an industry that’s still struggling to be compelling with computer graphics. As a result, we’re dealing with dynamic combats, decorations with nice designs and a visual aspect that allows the colors to show off well. The feature film also has the merit of dismissing the eternal Goku-Vegeta duo to highlight Piccolo, one of the saga’s most popular heroes, but also Son Gohan and other characters long put aside in the manga and anime storyline. Nevertheless, shortcomings keep popping up Dragon Ball great, namely a lightness of tone that contrasts with the seriousness of the situation and surprising, even pointless decisions. In any case, if you want to read other opinions on the film, this is done here!
