Amazon recently released a new feature for the Fire TV Stick that makes entering passwords easier. For security reasons it has now been temporarily removed.
There were previously two options for entering a password or other text on Amazon’s Fire TV Stick. Either you use the on-screen keyboard and laboriously select letter by letter using the remote control, or you install the Fire TV app on your cell phone, pair it with the stick and then enter text using the keyboard on your cell phone.
Amazon recently introduced a third option: You could use a QR code to connect your cell phone to the Fire TV Stick and use the cell phone keyboard to enter text without having to install an app. But now Amazon has removed the feature again – for security reasons.
QR code keyboard temporarily disabled
Like the fan blog AFTNews The company Green Line Analytics has reportedly discovered a security vulnerability in the function and reported it to Amazon. It is probably possible for third parties to take control of third-party Fire TV sticks using the QR code and, for example, install unwanted apps on them.
However, the risk of this happening is probably low because, according to AFTNews, it assumes that the attacker gets possession of the QR code, which is individual for each Fire TV Stick. However, Amazon has decided to temporarily deactivate the function. The company said in a statement to AFTNews that it plans to reactivate it as soon as the problem has been solved.
