Duke Nukem is one of the cult brands in the game industry, even if it hasn’t been a new part for a long time. But interesting for fans of the classic: A prequel that has been discontinued has suddenly appeared in the form of a trailer on the Internet.
Gearbox Software was still working on a new part of the shooter series around 2008, which was to be called Duke Nukem Begins. It was apparently a prequel that was to be played from the third-person perspective and relied on co-op elements. In the end, the title never appeared because it was later discontinued.
But now this prequel project has popped up online. Gergor Punchatz, an artist who was once hired by id Software to create sculptures for some of the iconic opponents of the DOOM franchise, has posted a video on the discontinued title. He was involved in work for the Texas-based animation studio Janimation in 2008, which Gearbox hired for the project.
In the video description, Punchatz explains that he once headed the project. At that time everything was given to publish the most breathtaking cinematic clip that Janimation had ever created, he explains in this context. Unfortunately, they then received the message that the game had been discontinued due to legal problems.
13 years later he wanted to publish the video anyway. The whole team that worked on it at the time deserved it.
Instead of Duke Nukem Begins, Duke Nukem Forever appeared after countless postponements in 2011, but was not convincing.
