Mortal Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon wants you to know Mortal Kombat 1 It’s a reboot, not a remake, despite the name.
earlier this week, hell studio It has been revealed that a new Mortal Kombat game is in development, a new game from the ground up, with a new universe created by Vulcan Liu Kang. But you’d understandably think it was a remake of the first game, or even Mortal Kombat (2011), which itself was a reboot of the series. But it wasn’t, and Boon explained why the game chose to be named that way in a video called “Community Chat with Tyler and Ed” (thanks PCGamesN).
“Mortal Kombat 1 was the beginning of the universe,” Boone explained. “This is not a continuation of the story of Mortal Kombat 11, so the characters have completely different roles in this new timeline, and we really wanted to emphasize that with our title. This is Mortal Kombat 1, which is A fresh start, and you’re going to see these characters reemerge in new roles, in new relationships, and that’s the main catalyst for it.”
To be clear: 1 is basically saying that this is the start of a new Mortal Kombat continuity. Given that there’s a whole bunch of things that are simply called Mortal Kombat (i.e. the original game, the 2011 game, the ’90s movie, and the 2021 movie), it’s not entirely surprising that Netherrealm wants to make it different A little bit.
The reboot looks to be changing in many ways, not just in terms of the new universe – classic characters like Scorpion, Kitana, and Johnny Cage have all been re-imagined, and there will be a roster of “Kameo” fighters in the game Serve as an assist. These will be a separate list of fighters, not necessarily playable alone in battle.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled for release on September 19 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
