Netflix may be reining in its spending a bit now, but it’s still looking to deliver blockbuster blockbusters that rarely make it to the big screen. Next up is The Russo Brothers’ Electric State, adapted from Simon Stallenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name.
While the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man didn’t resonate with critics as much as everyone hoped, it did well enough in terms of views for Netflix, which remains excited about continuing its partnership with the Marvel Studios legend Very interested. However, if nothing changes, this will be the last Netflix-backed movie before they return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Since the first images were released, many readers have criticized the film for replacing the novel’s more pessimistic and depressing dystopian tone for a more familiar and adventurous feel, which also applies to the visuals. The first trailer definitely did a better job of selling the film, but I’d say it’s still a far cry from Starlen Hager’s work. You can watch it below:
Directly from Netflix, the official synopsis was released alongside an early trailer: “Set in an alternate version of the ’90s, in the aftermath of a robot uprising, Electric State follows an orphaned teen as he adventures across the American West with a child. Story. A cartoon-style robot, a smuggler, and his assistant are looking for her brother.”
The budget was reportedly a whopping $320 million, which partly explains the large cast. Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Norman, Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci. Also featured are Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Hank Azaria, Coleman Domingo and Alan Tudyk Dubbing.
Comparisons to the novel aside, the bigger question here is: Does the movie look like a $320 million behemoth? I believe the answer is no. Marvel writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are also working with the Russo brothers again on the film, so the end result should be a good indication of what to expect from Avengers: Doomsday…unless they The secret to success is predetermined. -Kevin Feige was always there in Phase 4. Seeing as how Cherry and Gray Man fare despite being in completely different genres, maybe this theory is correct.
Regardless, I believe most Netflix subscribers will give it a chance when it releases on the platform on March 14, 2025. At the very least, it feels like it could be a nice flashy time killer, but we’re hoping for something more memorable.
