News culture “Enough is enough”: This actor refused to star in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” because he wanted to stand on his own two feet at 90
Turning down a role in a Christopher Nolan feature film is a crazy idea that’s hard to imagine as plausible. And yet.
Christopher Nolan is one of those directors who likes to accompany long-time friends to film his masterpieces. In “Oppenheimer”, for example, he signs his sixth collaboration with the actor Cillian Murphy, who has previously played supporting roles, notably in “ Batman begins et Dunkirk. And then of course there’s Michael Caine, a huge regular in Batman films. In total he can be seen in eight of the director’s feature films, including some very good ones The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk
So, okay, I don’t have Michael Caine, I’d better go with Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Cillian Murphy, Tom Conti, and I was hoping it was all that big The sum of these names would make one Michael Caine.
It’s hard not to notice the great admiration that Chrisopher Nolan has for his favorite colleague and the great regret that he couldn’t convince him to play in Oppenheimer. “So many people have helped me, so many people have been there for me in so many different ways. I am very touched to receive this award and very touched by the presentation. That means a lot to me.”
One last film for Michael Caine
Before we say goodbye to the cinema and leave behind thousands of orphaned fans, Michael Caine closes out in style by taking on the lead role in Oliver Parker’s (An Ideal Husband, Othello) next film, The Great Escaper. It tells the completely authentic story of Bernard Jordan, a British veteran who escaped from his retirement home one day in June 2014 to join his former comrades in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. A particularly touching story that wonderfully concludes a career with 150 films and 2 Oscars. A month earlier he told presenters on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I keep saying I’m retiring. Well, now it’s like this… The only roles I’ll probably get are old men, 90-year-olds, even 85-year-olds. I thought, “I might as well do this, I got really good reviews (for “The Great Escaper”). There are no 90-year-old main characters, but rather attractive young boys and girls.
