Normally, guns in video games are based on the design of real guns, but now it seems exactly the opposite has happened, and with a confusing background.
It’s a slightly bizarre story. As you might expect, the shooter Escape from Tarkov has a whole mountain of weapons. The game’s developers have now been accused by an indie studio called Ward B of stealing a weapon design from their title Oceanic. It is an EPM28 Mastodon named Wumme. Ward B has published detailed designs of the game’s weapons in the past.
So far so good. But as it now turns out, the real thief is apparently a weapons manufacturer from whom the Escape-from-Tarkov developers licensed this design for their guns. Said EPM28 Mastodon is strikingly similar to the MP-155 Ultima from Kalashnikov, which was presented in July. Above all, smaller, optical details and design elements are said to have been adopted 1: 1 from the video game weapon, including an L-shaped recess that Ward B designed as a motif for several weapons in the game.
A certain Maxim Kuzin is named as a possible person responsible for the design theft, who works for various companies and projects, including Kalashnikov. He is said to have previously approached Ward B and expressed an interest in the design of the Mastodon. The matter fell asleep, however, and a deal was not negotiated. Kuzin no longer responded to inquiries about a possible cooperation. Kuzin later claimed that he worked with another Russian designer who claims to have designed the MP-155 himself, the design of which was then licensed to the Escape from Tarkov team.
Annoying for Studio Ward B, which, however, wants to forego legal action due to the complications of the lawsuit filed by an American company against a Russian one. Ward B would like to point out, however, that their design is used without recognition.
