Halloween has just passed and Christmas is dangerously approaching. It’s time to put away the pumpkins and bats to put out the decorations and fairy lights. This also means reviewing classics like Nightmare before Christmas by Tim Burton. It has been this way since 1993.
Every Christmas we see Jack Skellington and Oggie Boggie face off in an exciting stop-motion fight. But have you ever wondered where a rivalry that seems so deep-rooted comes from? The truth is that there are two works that answer this question, but they are somewhat far from the original film.
Our protagonists have the same name The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin Kingbut one is a video game for Game Boy Advance from 2005 and another is a comic from 2023. Both works serve as a prequel. Halloween Town was still living in peace and Jack was the ideal candidate to create the perfect Halloween… although he had not yet established himself as the benchmark.
Then, Oogie Boogie arrived in town with plans to take over both the town and the Halloween holiday, thus vying for the role with Jack. He tried to gain the favor of the inhabitants and Jack himself, collaborating in different experiments similar to those we see in the film. However, Jack’s distrust grew as Oogie revealed his dark nature and macabre plans. Their idea of Halloween was uncontrolled fear and chaos. What we see reflected in the film.
Jack Skellington is the undisputed Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. But it wasn’t always like this… Years ago, Jack and Oogie Boogie were friends. Both eager to prove themselves, they poured all their passion into their spooky projects to earn their well-deserved place as the scariest duo in town. But there could only be one Pumpkin King! What could have happened to turn two best friends into such bitter rivals?
This story marks the beginning of the enmity and leads to the conflict that we see in Tim Burton’s film. Now, Oogie Boogie seeks to prevail and take revenge on Jack through deception, betrayal and direct confrontations. It’s a clash of ideologies and Halloween styles every time we watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. If you didn’t know, this year you will see the film with different eyes, at least ones with more context.
