Registration for Evo, the world’s largest fighting game tournament, has closed. With the tournament over, tournament organizers revealed that the number of participants has exceeded 10,000, making it the largest video game tournament in history. This number does not include non-participant ticket sales, which will remain valid until the tournament begins in July.
The news was posted on social media, alongside a blog post on Evo’s official website. The post details that the tournament also broke several game records, including for Tekken 8, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rise, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Exact numbers will be announced in the near future.

To meet that requirement, this year’s tournament will be held in a larger venue than last year, the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Reaching more than 10,000 attendees is a staggering milestone, especially when you consider that it means about 5,000 people will enter a bracket and lose 0-2 in the group stage – and then be left upset, penniless and with nothing to do in the casino. Still, those 10,000 people are a huge amount of money to support esports competitions, while other scenes would have a hard time attracting fans to drop a few bucks on a team’s jersey.
That number is obviously huge! The benefits of the open tournament format and relatively sustainable growth over the years based on ticket sales, advertising and booths are great. The 10,000 figure also means that Evo will need more volunteers than ever before, so if you’re coming to the event and don’t mind helping out with the order, you can apply on the official Evo website.
We’ll be on hand this July with previews, interviews, and hot new news, so keep checking back between July 19th-21st for all the action.
