The World Building of the Year architecture award in 2021 goes to the CopenHill project in Denmark. The jury was impressed by the combination of a power plant with an integrated ski slope.
- The CopenHill (Amager Slope) project of the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) is the “World Building of the Year”.
- The waste incineration plant combines environmentally friendly energy generation with a ski slope on the roof.
- The world’s highest climbing wall is also located here.
In this waste incineration plant, 440,000 tons of waste are converted into energy every year. More than 150,000 households are supplied with electricity and heat. The residents of the Danish city of Copenhagen appreciate this, among others. However, the waste incineration plant on the island of Amager in Öresund became famous for two other attractions.
The inclined roof of the power plant serves as an artificial ski slope. The slopes are 450 meters long. Different levels of difficulty and a slalom course ensure variety. Those who don’t like skiing can try their hand at the world’s highest climbing wall. A proud 85 meters in height or depth, depending on your perspective.
The building, which took over four years of construction, was now part of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Lisbon, Portugal excellent. We find: right! Because the idea of building a power plant with a ski slope on the roof must have sounded so crazy in the planning phase that it is now all the nicer to see it put into practice.
