Yes, you read that right. fablewhich came back from the dead with killer gameplay and a trailer showing off its narrative at the Xbox Showcase, left many wondering how much of what we’re seeing is real.
In a world of many often contradictory terms that are poorly explained, people are increasingly cynical about what is being shown. In-engine, in-game, CG, real-time in-engine all seem to be phrases thrown around to avoid saying whether we’re watching actual gameplay or not.
But at least in the case of Fable, this is the actual game running on the Xbox Series X hardware. Xbox head Phil Spencer actually touched on this briefly in an interview with Giant Bomb. In fact, the video begins with a cool “in-game video” in the lower third.
However, not everyone is convinced by Playground, even though some of the behind-the-scenes parts look like things you could do in an action game. Lukas Koelz, lead lighting artist at Fable developer Playground Games, said people questioning the game’s realism is “one of the best compliments”.
People don’t believe it’s “real” or that the game looks like that’s one of the best compliments. #fable pic.twitter.com/Id80HfTdXj

The artist shared some direct screenshots on Twitter, later adding It’s all captured on Xbox Series X
While it’s nice to see this confirmed, many people probably won’t believe it until they see some original gameplay with a HUD, like Bethesda spent 45 minutes detailing Starfield’s systems and gameplay. Of course, Starfield is just a few weeks away from release, and Fable has no release target, let alone a date.
