Despite the great references in the anime and manga adaptations videogame, not everyone can boast of having a game that lives up to what fans demand. Good example of this are many of the Dragon Ball titles that came out for the last generation, which made the players shout out for something like Dragon Ball FighterZ. Well, the case of Fairy Tail is, at least, particular, because not many studies have dared to adapt the work of Hiro Mashima and, when they have launched to do so, the series has already ended, what is a double-edged sword.
The study GUST, responsible for the Atelier saga, is in charge of embarking on this complicated adventure, since if there is a loyal audience to unimaginable extremes, those are the anime and manga followers. And I, as one of them (in addition to all my other conditions and types), I have been able to try a demo of the game that Koei Tecmo will edit and that will come out in March next year. The test has been very scarce (very short) and if this were a real representation of the game that will arrive in 2020, I could say, without a doubt, that it is a small initial disappointment
Biased history
What usually offers a title like Fairy Tail is a review, quite well built, by the history of the work on which it is based. This has happened with One piece, Berserk or, more recently, Attack the titans (all of them licenses in which they have worked, mainly, Omega Force and Koei Tecmo. In the case of the title at hand, being a JRPG cutting game In the purest Person style, GUST has had to make a difficult decision: delete part of the story and focus on a few more recent arcs to develop the playable plot of this title.
This means that those who expect to have a kind entry in the saga, will find the opposite. You have to be an advanced fan and very put in the work of Mashima to really enjoy what they are going to have. If it were a JRPG game by turns of original theme, there would be no problem, but here the thing is that Fairy Tail is what will sell the game, mainly, in all territories.
The story starts just after the temporary jump suffered on Tenrou IslandWhen the Great Magic Games are going to start and Fairy Tail is relegated to one last place among the most powerful guilds. It is a good point to start a game, but it is true that it is far from being a title that invites new players to want to join.
A very interesting JRPG
If something characterizes the members of GUST is the style of play they have developed so far. As a Japanese study, they have specialized in role titles (like all of the Atelier saga) and in Koei they have wanted quite unmarked from what they have been doing so far with the rest of the licenses they have in their portfolio
Fairy Tail remembers, without a doubt, the saga Persona de P · Studio, since we will relive the different chapters of several arcs of manga and anime through a combination of exploration, dialogues and fighting. This cocktail of elements is, a priori, something rare for a shonen like that of Hiro Mashima, but I found it quite light and enjoyable in the demo of a few minutes to which I have had access. A floating menu is the one that offers players the different actions to be carried out and among them are some of the most characteristic attacks of the characters. All of them with their corresponding shout in original voices to light more the internal fire of the fans.
Need a lot more work
I know perfectly well that I have faced an unfinished game (and that it required a lot more time to get a more global vision of what it can be finally), but GUST has not had a round game that should if we take into account its precedents and also the level of work that Koei Tecmo usually has. The characters, although with very good designs (and true to what is seen in the anime), have rare expressions that do not match the movements they carry out, something that quite dislodges.
The level of modeling and environment is also quite far from what is expected of a game with these characteristics. The hack ‘n’ slash games also boast quite large environments and always in much more detail. In the case of Fairy Tail, it is necessary to work, therefore, on this level being, at least, the one from which to start to carry out a remarkable game.
Thus, we are facing what can be a great adaptation. Quite risky in terms of playable terms, but that can go very well or very badly. If I have to draw a conclusion from the demo, it's still he needs a lot of work ahead.
