The team behind Fallout: Vault 13, a modding project dedicated to remaking the first Fallout game in Fallout 4, has announced that it has decided to “pause” development.
This spring and summer, us Fallout fans can also enjoy content such as the Fallout TV series, the Fallout 76 expansion pack, and Fallout: London, as the creators of Vault 13 launch demos for their projects that are winning players over. Positive reviews.

Now, however, just a few months after the August demo, we have decided to “officially pause development of Fallout Shelter 13.” In a statement posted on the modding project’s Discord server and later shared to his Twitter account, founder and project co-lead Culwino explained that this course of action was chosen after “deliberate consideration.”
“This was not an easy decision, but we believe it is the right step for this stage of our journey,” they wrote. “I understand this may be unexpected news and we deeply apologize for any disappointment it may have caused.” Nonetheless, we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far, the demo is a huge milestone and its success shows how much effort and passion the entire team and community have put into this project.
In the server’s FAQ section, Culwino added that the pause was due to “a number of factors, including burnout, difficulty recruiting and retaining team members with special skills, and personal life changes for core team members.” They explained that there was no infighting or shutdown at Bethesda, “Ultimately, this was an ambitious project completed by volunteers with limited resources. The decisions we made were made to prioritize the well-being of project members.”

Returning to their statement, it continues: “While active development is coming to an end, we want to ensure that all the work we’ve done sees the light of day. In the coming weeks, we’ll be releasing Fallout: Shelter 13”, including all unfinished content. This release will allow the community to experience the project in its current form and lay the groundwork for anyone interested in continuing or building on it in the future. We plan to upload this release to Nexus Mods. Make sure the community has access to all the work we’ve done so far, preserving it for future modders and fans.”
That’s not all the team plans to do, Culwino writes, “This is a look back at everything we’ve accomplished with Fallout Shelter 13, celebrating the high points, lessons learned, and the passion that drove this project” that they Something intended to be rolled out “offline”.
There’s some sad news at the moment, but at least it looks like you’ll still have a chance to see what the Vault 13 team has accomplished so far. Plus, as we’ve seen with other ambitious modding projects like Fallout: New Mexico, development stalls like this don’t always prove to be the end of the road they seem to be.
One thing you still have to look forward to is Bethesda’s first-ever Fallout Day broadcast on October 23, which promises the developer will get some updates about Fallout 76 as well as a community-hosted parade. Additionally, Fallout: London got a major update last week.
