The development of Google Stadia is not yet complete, and some useful features have so far been completely missing. For example, players who use Stadia via their Android device are dependent on an additional, external controller.
A fan project is now filling this gap and is bringing a virtual touch controller (on-screen controller) as an extension for Chrome – called "TouchStadia".
While Stadia could only be used to play on the Google phones Pixel 2, 3 and 4 for the release, Google recently added the list to many Galaxy models from the S8, the Razer Phone 1 and 2 and the Asus ROG Phone 1 and 2 expanded, as announced in an official blog post.
What is required for TouchStadia?
First of all, it must be said that the TouchStadia developed by »Drake Luce« only works via Google Chrome, it cannot be used for the mobile Stadia app.
In addition, the virtual input device is currently only designed for Android devices and desktop computers – whereby the latter are unlikely to benefit much from the app.
If all requirements are met, you can TouchStadia as an extension for Chrome, The user interface overlays the selected game (overlay). The interface of the virtual touch controller can even be adapted to your own needs, as explained below in the text.
In the following video the developer TouchStadia presents the current version 0.0.25:
How is TouchStadia installed?
Developer Drake Luce offers TouchStadia in code form on his homepage. Since Google Chrome does not automatically allow extensions as an app, TouchStadia must be implemented manually. It works like this:
-
Open the TouchStadia homepage
- Copy the code from the box
- Open Google Stadia via Chrome and display it as a desktop website
- Enter »javascript:« in the address line, insert the code (no space after the colon) and confirm
On the TouchStadia homepage, the On-screen controls moreover can be configured, For example, the size of the buttons and sticks, the distance to the sides and the transparency can be freely selected.
