Do you remember the Bionicles? Those Lego action figures with the spooky masks? As a huge Lego fan, I’ve never really immersed myself in their universe, but as a kid I always loved reading the comics about these unusual heroes.
Apparently, some Bionicle fans missed them a lot and decided to dedicate their own open-world game in Unreal Engine 5 to the characters. You can see what the project is all about and what the first gameplay looks like here.
What are the Bionicles anyway?
In 2001, Lego launched Bionicle, its own line of robot-like figures that are the heroes of a tropical island called Mata Nui. A terrible villain is raging on the island that the six warriors must defeat using their elemental powers and powerful masks hidden on the island.
What is Masks of Power game?
The fan project will be an open world action-adventure where you will explore the island and fight all kinds of creatures and enemies to help the residents. The first gameplay trailer already shows what the battles look like in the game:

In the trailer you see Lewa, who has special air powers. In the finished game, however, you should be able to play as all six heroes and unlock various new abilities by finding 12 masks each. You will not only explore dense primeval forests, but also many other landscapes. A few screenshots give you a foretaste:

It is not yet known when Masks of Power will appear. A demo is currently in progress, which, like the game to come later, is free of charge available on Steam should be. Also, you can already try an older, completed version of the game, but it’s not nearly as pretty. It goes for download This way.
What else is there to know?
Masks of Power is not the first game in the Bionicle universe, nor is it the first fan project. There were already two official games in 2003 and 2006, but they didn’t go down too well. Quest for Mata Nui is also another fan-made open-world adventure that takes Fabiano back to his childhood:

A Lego game is currently being created that I’ve been dreaming of for years
Some of the Quest for Mata Nui developers are also working on Masks of Power. However, it is not specified whether the two projects are connected.
What do you think of the first gameplay of Masks of Power? Did you also play with the Bionicle figures back then, or did they leave you cold? Write your opinion in the comments!
