We'll never know exactly what Fallout: Van Buren would have looked like, but we're now getting very close.

We’ll never know exactly what Fallout: Van Buren would have looked like, but we’re now getting very close.

While we’ll probably have to wait a few more years for the next Fallout spin-off from Bethesda, there are already new hopes from the community. Not only does the community have Fallout: London in store, but they’ve also resurrected a sequel that was scrapped over 20 years ago. And you can even download it.

The sequel we never got

We’re talking about Fallout 3. Huh, doesn’t that already exist? Yes, that’s true. But it’s completely different than what was originally planned. Before Bethesda acquired the rights to the post-apocalyptic brand, worked at Black Isle Studiosthe team behind the first two parts, are already working on a sequel of the same name.

However, the development was cancelled in 2003 due to cost reasons. At that time it was called Van Buren, which is why it is now known as Fallout: Van Buren or Fallout 3: Van Buren is known.

That’s what it’s about: Starting in a locked prison cell, you were supposed to move through the dusty southwest of the USA in Van Buren. The story was supposed to revolve around a mad scientist who uses forgotten superweapons to wipe out any form of mutated life.

Fallout 5, Fallout London, Series: The future will be a balancing act

Lots of content, with a temporary limitation

Thanks to the ambitious project Fallout Yesterday you now have the opportunity to play Van Buren after all. Those responsible have collected all the information they could find and recreated the game as best as they could as a mod for Fallout 2. The template used included Screenshots from the development phasewhich have now come to the surface.

There is one restriction you must observe: Fallout Yesterday is not quite finished yet, but you can already play through the main story – at least if you play a character who specializes in science and repairs. Despite numerous perks and characteristics, you can only develop freely if the story is not that important to you at the moment.

New content: On July 6, 2024, Version 0.6which added 30 new missions, 100 new weapons and numerous new features such as vehicles and a hunger system. A list of all new content can be found at Nexus Mods.

Play Fallout Yesterday: You can download Fallout Yesterday via Patreon or Nexus Mods. But keep in mind that you must own Fallout 2 to use the mod.

In addition to Fallout Yesterday, there is currently another, much more extensive mod in sight – but for the fourth offshoot. We’re talking about Fallout: London. You can find more information about it in the box above. You’ll also find all the important information about a mega-project in which over 100 hobby developers are working on an unofficial and free open-world remake of Fallout 2.
