Technology fans look at Google in disbelief. The company apparently wants to introduce audio emojis. It’s not just the thought of constant farts while talking on the phone that annoys many people.

Google's new feature has the potential to be really annoying when making calls. Who likes to hear fart noises during a conversation?

From time to time, even a highly successful company like Google comes up with a stupid idea. Although the feature doesn’t even officially exist yet, Google’s new audio emojis are already a complete failure for many. At least that’s the impression you get when you look at the sometimes devastating reactions from fans online.

Some users of the Android-exclusive app have already been able to try out the new function, such as the Google-affiliated technology website 9to5Google reported.

You can access audio emojis via a button in the phone menu and a button above it. There are six different sound effects to choose from, each linked to a corresponding emoji:

  • clapping (applause)
  • laughter
  • Party
  • Crying (trombone)
  • Farting
  • Drum sound (“Ba Dum Tsss”)

If you call someone using the Google Phone app, you can choose one of these emojis and a funny animation will play, accompanied by the appropriate sound effect. Not only you hear the sound effect, but also the person you are talking to. For many people, this is already an absolutely insignificant feature that could be quite annoying in the long run.

Google’s audio emojis: Fans react with mockery and ridicule

Im Reddit-Forum Technology fans are eagerly discussing the new function and are not saying good things about Google’s new “innovation”. Many find the function simply pointless or completely crazy, others believe that Google should have put the work into other projects. However, some also note how annoying the feature can be in phone calls when the other person is constantly playing farts, laughter and other noises.

At least Google has taken the latter into account, which is why the audio emojis also result in a short pause. So you can’t use the sound effects constantly one after the other. There should also be the option to deactivate the feature completely. 9to5Google expects the feature to roll out to all Google Phone app users in the next few weeks.

However, the opinions of technology fans speak for themselves and there is much to suggest that the feature will ultimately be used primarily for prank calls and by young people. Given the reactions, it is at least doubtful that the new audio emojis will also be a topic at Google’s developer conference Google i/o on May 14, 2024.
